Why Visibility Matters More Than Followers

Ask most tourism operators how their marketing is going and the first number they reach for is followers. It’s the number the apps put front and centre, so it’s the one that feels like the scoreboard.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: your follower count and your bookings are only loosely related. Plenty of businesses with modest followings are fully booked through peak season. Plenty with large followings quietly wonder why the enquiries don’t match the numbers.

The thing that actually moves bookings isn’t followers. It’s visibility: being seen by the right people, at the right moment in their decision, in a way that makes choosing you easy.

Followers measure who already found you. Visibility decides who finds you next.

Your followers are, by definition, people who have already discovered you. They’re valuable, but they’re yesterday’s audience. Most of the people who will book you this year don’t follow you yet. Many will never follow you at all. They’ll find you, look, decide, and book, sometimes within a single sitting.

If your marketing is built around keeping your existing followers entertained, you’re optimising for the people who need the least convincing, and staying invisible to the people who matter most: the ones still deciding where to stay, what to do, and whether your part of the South West is worth the trip.

Visibility isn’t one thing. It’s the whole journey.

A visitor doesn’t experience your business as a feed. They move through a journey, and visibility means showing up at each stage of it:

  • Discover: Can they find you at all? Do you appear in search? Does your content reach beyond your existing followers?
  • Consider: When they compare you against three other options, do your photos, reviews and messaging make you the obvious, trustworthy choice?
  • Book: Is the path from “interested” to “booked” effortless, on a phone, in a couple of taps?
  • Experience: Is the stay or the tour something they’ll want to photograph, share and remember?
  • Recommend: Do happy guests have an easy reason to leave a review, tag you, or tell a friend?

Followers touch maybe one slice of that journey. Visibility runs through all five.

What to do instead of chasing followers

  1. Check your reach, not just your following. How many non-followers are you reaching? That number tells you whether you’re being discovered or just talking to the same people.
  2. Audit your discoverability. Search for what you offer, in your area, the way a visitor would. Are you there?
  3. Make the next step obvious. Every platform should lead clearly to how to book or enquire.
  4. Show the experience, not just the product. Help visitors imagine being there. That’s what turns a look into a booking.
  5. Connect the pieces. Your content, website, reviews, local partnerships and guest experience should point the same direction. Everything is connected.

Good tourism marketing doesn’t start with posting more. It starts with understanding how visitors decide, and making sure you show up, clearly, at every stage of that journey.
