The October Booking Window: Your Summer Is Decided This Month

There is a version of the summer season that most South West operators experience. December arrives, the phone starts ringing, the good weeks fill, a few awkward gaps never do, and by February everyone agrees it was a decent season that could have been better.

Almost none of that was decided in December. It was decided now.

Why October carries your summer

Peak summer travel in regional Australia is typically booked eight to twelve weeks in advance. Count backwards from Christmas week and you land in the middle of October. Count backwards from the first week of January and you land in late October.

There is a reason the timing is so consistent. Summer holidays involve other people. Leave has to be approved, a group has to agree, someone has to check the school calendar, and often a second family is coming. Group decisions take weeks, and they start with someone opening a browser and building a shortlist.

If your December and January availability is not published, priced and bookable at the moment that shortlist is being built, you are not on it. Not because you were rejected. Because you were not visible when the decision was in play, and nobody comes back later to check whether you have updated your calendar.

The cost of waiting

Holding back availability feels like caution. In practice it changes who books you.

Early bookers are planning a holiday they care about. They are comparing on fit rather than price, they book longer stays, and they are more likely to add experiences, meals and extras once they arrive. Late bookers are, by definition, people whose first choice was already taken. They negotiate harder, stay shorter and are more likely to cancel.

An operator who publishes in October sells to the first group. An operator who publishes in late November sells to whoever is left, and usually discounts to do it. Same business, same rooms, different customer, because of a decision about timing that had nothing to do with quality.

What people are actually searching for

Summer searches are more specific than the rest of the year, because the trip is more complicated. The questions that matter now are practical ones.

How many does it actually sleep, and how are the beds configured. Is there air conditioning. How far is the beach in minutes. Is there parking for two cars and a boat. What is the minimum stay over the Christmas period. Can we bring the dog. Is there shade in the afternoon.

Every one of those answered publicly removes a reason to keep scrolling. Every one left vague sends someone to a competitor who answered it. Summer bookings are lost far more often to ambiguity than to price.

Four things to do this month

1. Publish and price everything. December, January and the February long weekend. Rates loaded, minimum stays set, closed dates blocked, cancellation terms in plain words. Bookable at ten at night without contacting you.

2. Answer the practical questions in writing. Take the list above, answer each one honestly on your own website, and stop losing bookings to people who could not be bothered emailing to ask.

3. Tell the people who already like you. Everyone who visited during the spring school holidays is a warm list. A three sentence email telling them summer is open will outperform a month of advertising to strangers.

4. Sell the awkward weeks deliberately. You already know which weeks never fill. The one between Christmas and New Year, or the second week of January, or whatever it is for your business. Build one specific offer for that week now, while there is still time for it to work. In December it is too late to be anything but a discount.

The uncomfortable part

None of this is marketing in the way most operators think about marketing. There is no campaign here, no clever creative, nothing to post.

It is an afternoon of admin that decides several months of revenue. Which is precisely why it keeps getting postponed, and why the businesses that do it in the second week of October quietly outperform businesses that are, in every other respect, just as good.

Your summer is being decided this month, by people you will never speak to, based on what they can find. The only question is whether you are findable while they are deciding.
